Landfill Tax rises again on April 1, 2012 to £64.00 per tonne, further increasing costs throughout the waste management industry. Even for those of us that avoid the use of landfill, increases in Landfill Taxes mean unavoidable increases in costs in many cases.
Unfortunately, the UK's waste industry does still use the Landfill Tax rate as a reference point for all disposal/reprocessing costs. So far, due to a lack of reprocessing capacity (e.g. energy from waste plants or material recovery facilities) not enough competition exists to push down prices and landfill remains a viable option for many. Even recycling/recovery plants that use landfill as a last option for any non-recyclable residual waste are forced to absorb these increases and the impact is felt all along the chain of waste management activities.
There are, however, an increasing number of ways to reduce the impact of rising waste management costs. Making small changes to your waste collections could reduce your waste management costs and ensure your organisation's compliance with legislation, both in the present and the future.
