DTS Waste Blog

DTS Waste Management was incorporated as a separate entity in 2010, following its split from sister company, DTS Environmental. The company assumed responsibility for a number of existing customers, providing them with the same high levels of DTS service they had become accustomed to. Splitting into a smaller company has enabled DTS Waste to focus on a smaller number of activities, while drawing upon many years of accumulated experience in the waste industry.

Landfill Tax: Reduce the Impact on Your Business

Landfill Tax rises again on April 1, 2012 to £64.00 per tonne, further increasing costs throughout the waste management industry. Even for those of us that avoid the use of landfill, increases in Landfill Taxes mean unavoidable increases in costs in many cases.

Unfortunately, the UK's waste industry does still use the Landfill Tax rate as a reference point for all disposal/reprocessing costs. So far, due to a lack of reprocessing capacity (e.g. energy from waste plants or material recovery facilities) not enough competition exists to push down prices and landfill remains a viable option for many. Even recycling/recovery plants that use landfill as a last option for any non-recyclable residual waste are forced to absorb these increases and the impact is felt all along the chain of waste management activities.

There are, however, an increasing number of ways to reduce the impact of rising waste management costs. Making small changes to your waste collections could reduce your waste management costs and ensure your organisation's compliance with legislation, both in the present and the future.

Top Safety Accreditation for DTS Waste Management

DTS Waste Management is one of the latest in a group of successful companies to join a leading edge scheme, designed to help industry improve its safety record.

The Barnsley-based firm recently received accreditation from SAFEcontractor, a programme which recognises very high standards of health and safety practise amongst UK contractors. Founded in 2010, DTS Waste Management is principally involved in the commercial and industrial waste collection and recycling industry.

Specialising in the retail and education sectors, DTS’s most recent clients have included major players such as The Mall Alhambra Shopping Centre and Barnsley College.

The company’s application for SAFEcontractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business.

David Thackray, DTS Waste Management’s Managing Director explained, “We take health and safety issues very seriously, but we are a relatively new company in a very competitive sector. As such, we need all the help we can get when it comes to reassuring blue-chip organisations that we are as conscious of health and safety as some of our more well-known competitors. We decided that applying for the prestigious accreditation from SAFEcontractor was the best way to do this and I’m delighted we have achieved it.”

SAFEcontractor accreditation is expected to enhance the company’s ability to attract new contracts and its commitment to safety will be viewed positively by its insurers when the company liability policy is up for renewal.

SAFEcontractor is applicable to most sectors although it is particularly relevant to food manufacture, property, facilities management, retail and leisure sectors, all of which are big users of contract services.

John Kinge, Head of Risk at SAFEcontractor said, "Major organisations can no longer run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies".

"More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that DTS Waste Management has done. The firm’s high standard has set an example, which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector".

Under the SAFEcontractor system, businesses undergo a vetting process, which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website, www.safecontractor.com

Employer-organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database, enabling them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. These employers agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation.

Over one hundred and fifty major nation-wide businesses, from several key sectors, have signed up to use the scheme when selecting contractors for services such as building, cleaning, maintenance, refurbishment or electrical and mechanical work.
